Schema markup is boring. Being invisible is worse.

schema tags, decorative

Nobody brags about structured data. Nobody puts it in a case study. Nobody pitches a client on schema markup.

Pages with structured data get cited 3.1 times more often in Google AI Overviews. The boring code you never think about is now the difference between getting surfaced by AI and getting ignored. Most sites still skip it, which means the window to be early is open and closing.

What structured data is, in plain terms

Search engines and AI models do not read your page the way you do. They read code.

When a human looks at your page, they see a product with a price, a rating, and a delivery date. A machine sees a wall of text and has to guess which part is the price and which part is the rating. Structured data removes the guess. It is markup, a layer of code, that labels each part of your content so a machine knows exactly what it is looking at.

This is the price. This is the rating. This is the author. This is the event date. You tell the machine directly, instead of hoping it figures it out.

Why it suddenly matters more

For years, structured data was a nice-to-have. It earned you the occasional rich result in search, the star ratings and extra detail under a link.

AI search raised the stakes. Now the machine reads your site to build an answer, and it cites the sources it understands most clearly. When your code is silent, the AI guesses, and a guessing machine guesses conservatively. It reaches for the source that spelled things out. That source gets cited. You do not.

Google’s AI Overviews already appear on a large share of shopping queries. The machine is reading product data to decide what to surface. Silent data loses to labeled data, every time the machine has to choose.

The free real estate most sites leave behind

Here is what structured data earns you, at no media cost.

  • Citations in AI answers, where a growing share of your buyers now look first.
  • Rich results in search, the star ratings and extra detail that pull more clicks from the same ranking position.
  • Accurate representation, because you told the machine what your content means instead of letting it guess wrong.

This is space your competitors leave empty, because the work is invisible and nobody thinks to do it. The brand that labels its data clearly takes the citation. The brand that does not stays invisible, no matter how good its actual content is.

The agentic angle

This gets more urgent as AI agents start shopping for customers.

An agent does not browse your site. The agent queries your data and compares you to alternatives. Structured, complete product data is how the agent finds you, understands you, and trusts you enough to recommend or buy. A product with clean structured data is legible to the agent. A product without it is invisible, regardless of price or quality.

The businesses preparing their structured data now are getting ready for a buyer that judges them entirely on what a machine can read. The ones who skip it are building for a web that is fading.

How to know if yours is set up

A quick, honest self-check.

  • Do your product pages have structured markup for price, availability, and reviews? If you are not sure, that usually means no.
  • Have you tested your pages in a structured data validator? Free tools exist and take minutes.
  • Do your most important pages, the ones you want cited, label their content for machines? Or do they leave the machine to guess?
  • Does your delivery and availability information get exposed as data, not just text? Agents rank on the data.

If you answered no to most of these, you are leaving citations and clicks on the table.

The takeaway

Structured data is unglamorous, invisible, and now table stakes.

It gets you cited more, surfaced more, and represented accurately, while your competitors who skip it stay invisible to AI and agents alike. This is the boring engineering that compounds, quietly, for years. At MZD, we build structured data into every site from the start, because the cheapest way to win the AI channel is to make your content something a machine wants to cite.
